Mission

Kyokushin for All is a unique program developed specifically for children from five to twelve years of age who fall within the autism spectrum (high functioning).  It helps to allow them to achieve their full potential and independence by contributing towards their skills and abilities needed to be successful in their communities.

Kyokushin Karate is a style of stand-up, full contact karate, founded in 1964 by Masutatsu Oyama.  Kyokushinkai is Japanese for “the society of the ultimate truth” and is rooted in a philosophy of self-improvement, discipline and hard training.

Course Description

Kyokushin for All is a program specifically for young children that fall within the autism spectrum that are high functioning and are either limited or challenged in their engagement with daily community activities due to physical, mental and psychosocial limitations as a result of their disability.

This course consists of self-defense techniques involving kicking, punching, and blocking as well as meditation techniques. It will be taught in French, English, and Japanese.  By the end of each session, the participants will obtain some skills and knowledge of how to defend themselves.

Benefits

•    Attention span and focus

•    Gross motor skills
•    Sensory processing skills
•    Social skills
•    Self-esteem and self confidence
•    Some ability to defend themselves in the community

Qualifications

•    Each participant must have the cognitive ability to decipher when it is appropriate to use Karate.  Martial Arts is a form of self defense and should not be used to provoke.  It is always better to avoid confrontation.

•    Paperwork must be completed prior to participation in this program by a parent.

•   Student must be independent with mobility during each class session.  Physical fitness is essential and will be worked on during every class.  The young student will have to perform jumping jacks, pushups, sit ups, among other forms of physical exercise.  The student’s age and ability will always be respected, however this will be required.

•   The student will hear loud noises during the class as there is a lot of energy being used by both the teacher(s) and students.  In Japanese, we call this Kiai.  It commonly refers to a short yell during a strike or a technique which is usually linked to an inner gathering of energy released in a single explosive focus of will.

•   The student must be able to accept being touched with physical contact (with control and supervision) as punching, kicking, and self defensive techniques will be taught and practiced during every session.

•   Participants must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

This course will be ten 50 minute sessions and is intended to introduce the child to the world of Karate (Kyokushin style).  Once completed, and the child enjoyed the experience, we encourage them to join our regularly scheduled classes offered throughout the week to various age groups and levels, including adults.

Price

The cost for the ten week course is $159 plus applicable taxes.  The child will receive a karate uniform upon signing.
